Bio
A true believer in the healing power of music for the mind, body, and soul, Sar Kamler's sound pivots around the duduk, a double-reeded woodwind instrument native to Armenia. Sar's music, deeply rooted in themes of love, aims to bring light into the world through his idyllic style. The duduk, known for its warm, soft, and slightly nasal timbre, mirrors the human voice in its emotional depth, making it a universally resonant instrument. Sar is dedicated to exploring the duduk's potential by integrating it with various musical styles and instruments.Growing up in Yerevan, Armenia, Sar was drawn to the music of his homeland from an early age. It was later in life that he began to master the duduk, a journey that led him to meet Georgy Minasov, a renowned musician and duduk innovator. Under Georgy's mentorship, Sar expanded his musical knowledge and skills, adopting the extended-range duduk to explore genres beyond traditional Armenian music, including jazz and classical.Sar's performances have captivated audiences across Toronto since his debut in 2019. His notable appearances include the "Mystical Duduk in Toronto" concert and the "Armenia Meets Cuba" jazz project with Hilario Duran, blending Armenian soulfulness with Cuban rhythms. In 2020, Sar showcased his talents in a solo performance for the Armenian episode of Sounds of Canada.Sar Kamler is channeling his creative energies into a series of ambitious projects that highlight his growth and versatility as a musician. Among these, his debut solo album, "Butterfly," stands out as a significant milestone. "Butterfly" is Sar's exploration of the duduk's capabilities beyond the confines of traditional Armenian folk music, showcasing the instrument's versatility across a broader musical landscape. For the first time, Sar steps into the role of composer, offering nine original compositions that mark a new chapter in his musical journey. The album's title, "Butterfly," symbolizes Sar's personal and artistic transformation, reflecting his evolution from a duduk player to a composer who can fully articulate his vision through music. In addition to "Butterfly," Sar continues to captivate audiences with the "Soothing Echoes of Duduk" series, a collection of ambient music releases that provide a monthly oasis of calm and reflection. His collaboration with pianist Viktor Kott in the "Café Duduk" duo brings contemporary interpretations of Armenian and popular music to life, blending acoustic lounge and chill-out jazz in innovative performances. Furthermore, Sar's involvement with the Ethnosonic band sees him managing and performing in an ensemble that celebrates original music rooted in Circassian, Armenian, and Ukrainian folk traditions. Through these diverse endeavors, Sar Kamler is not only expanding the duduk's horizons but also forging a unique path that intertwines tradition with contemporary expression.
